Whitworth Art Gallery

Specialist installation in listed building:

The Whitworth Gallery in Machester underwent a £15million refurbishment in 2014 and Mole Engineering supported the project with the installation of specialist ducting beneath a marble floor. Founded in 1889 Whitworth Art Gallery is subject to a conservation order which presents challenges when updating a historical building to modern requirements but an ambitious project to breathe new life into the Gallery meant that modernisation was key.

The gallery needed ducting for network communications to run beneath a marble floor. We successful installed this using our small set up directional drill rig to traverse the clay and rubble beneath the marble. The floor remained intact and improved communications were enabled.

The Gallery reopened to the public in 2015, winning that year’s museum of the year prize and a host of architecture and design awards including the RIBA national award and Architects Journal award.
