University Solar Farm - Trenchless, Cable Installation

Mole Group were contacted almost 18 months ago as part of a feasibility study for the trenchless installation of the cabling for a prospective solar farm at a well-known South West University.

The route included a very steep incline/decline from the top of the proposed panel location to the substation, adjacent to the university accommodation.

The route further included crossing an existing stream, root protection zone and a made road.

The project went back and forth until winter 2023 when the final route was decided along with the requirements for the job.

It was determined that 1no 160mm OD MDPE duct and 1no 110mm OD MDPE duct would be required around 140m each in total. These would need to be installed in separate bores with a minimum distance of 1m between them. We chose our Astec drilling rig for this installation, it was the perfect size to set up on the prospective launch pad. Anything larger wouldn’t have fit in and anything smaller wouldn’t have stood a chance!

Prior to arrival on site a topography survey was carried out alongside a GPR scan. This would provide us with not only the details on the existing utilities but the information which would allow the onsite engineers to precisely calculate the route and depth they would need to be at the control the drill and allow for a successful installation.

This was a very tough drill for our site team with almost immediately hitting a rock bed. This took many attempts to find the right pocket to break into, remain at a suitable depth and follow the lay of the land.

It is the tricky drills which separate our incredible drilling team apart from the rest, their experience and knowledge really comes into play when they hit points in the job where most would struggle to make their next move.

Mole were able to successfully install both ducts as requested by the client in order to meet up the panel installation and provide the university with a massive amount of renewable energy.

We are now seeing that most of the ‘cream of the crop’ locations for solar farms have been taken and the majority of the locations available are not the most appealing. With more recent experience being in the most difficult locations, we are more than happy to help on your next project. Whether this be a feasibility study or advice on an installation.

With over 40 years experience in the utilities sector, we are never shocked at a request and always welcome any enquiries
